But in this novel Janakiraman questions that.
Lust can remain even for years. Aug 29, Mahesh rated it it was amazing. No spoilers. I read this book in 90's during my college days. Next pages I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Even without much knowledge about formal classical music, I could read layers of meaning and depth through Thi. Ja's amazing portrayal and narration in this novel. It flows smoothly like the river Cauvery of yore.
All characters were very memorable, the incidents and feelings very believable, the net result very wonderful. View all 7 comments. A boy who is who come to study in collage away from home, a son of a singer, a passionate youngster , and he does with his life.
It all becomes more sensible ,complicated and difficult when he meets his past love and passion-a past that he did dare to become involved with. There is no nothingness in this story. It is a youthful, well handled, realistic story of young boy who is struggling between his passion, love, boyish feelings and society What to say? It is a youthful, well handled, realistic story of young boy who is struggling between his passion, love, boyish feelings and society.
Unlike some other T. It is about a man whose world starts to fall apart when he cannot choose side between the reality, his feelings, his father, his feelings and himself-he who bound by the social opinions to his inner self. When he did overcome by his feelings and who becomes hurt when he cannot feel himself as a man from a world whose control and his beliefs he thought was eternal. Yet in this this story the world which fell apart does not become black or blocked but more clear and beautiful and clear.

To be honest i find this book okayish. Maybe translation lost its essence or it didn't work out well for me. Every book that seems way ahead of time probably explains the ignorance of the people of this generation who think they are more forward. Case in point is this book by Thi. Ja which takes on extremely bold characters set in the most conservative of settings - a veda patshala.
Appu spends 16 years in a veda patshala in the quite little village by the river Cauvery away from his parents Alangaram the titular Amma and Dhandapani. Bhavaniammal is the matron? Appu is about to go back to his family after his education when the young Indu expresses her feelings for him.
When he turns her down saying he can't bring shame to his mother - she throws words at him which changes his entire life. Back in Chennai we meet the parents and the family. We have the astrologer dad who doesn't believe in astrology and we meet Alangaram in all her glory - the dominant mother and wife whose decision is final.
The twists and the shocks are laid on with a subtelety that belies the gravity of the facts. A son's 'unconditional love' is tested and the ending seems to justify.
Set in a Brahmin family, the language sticks to agraharam. I am sure the book would have experienced quite a bit of wrath in the s. The 'Moral' vs heart conflict at it's scandalous best.

First was "Thanneer" by Asogamithran. I'll tell you upfront that this book is not for everyone. It's like a slow moving movie. The book made a big impact with me. Written in the '60s, I read that the author Thi. Ja was banished from his h This book will forever be etched in my heart for two reasons.
Ja was banished from his hometown for writing this novel. Almost all of the characters are so very well crafted. And my god, whattey display of character by Indhu and Alangaram. Almost the same and yet the differences! One of the best women centric novels that I have ever read! Talk about subtle - the area that I'm very weak at - this novel slips in a lot of subtle philosophy and meanings.
Though I was able to get only a few, a re-read will definitely get me more things. One of the very few books that I'm planning to re-read. I can't stop talking about this anymore without leaving spoilers, so I'll stop at this.
Recommended to everyone who can read a patient literature. Appu shuns a widowed Indhu citing how he cannot be unfaithful to the values espoused by his mother only to go home and find his mother tearing those very "values" to bits and pieces in this s classic.
Janakiraman's immersive prose which values emotions over "ethics" is sure to ruffle many a conservative feather as it did when the novel was published. Readers of Modern Tamil literature should make this novel a mandatory read. Aug 27, Dinesh rated it really liked it Shelves: fiction. May 03, Shyam Sundar rated it really liked it. View 1 comment. Nice Book. Was this book really written in ? The majority of authors in this time are focusing on past issues mostly related to caste whereas the old-timers were focused on people's relationships. Some of their thoughts are still advanced. After Jeyakandhan, Janakiraman is one such author. We don't want a few books to end at all.
We just want to travel with those characters. Amma Vanthaal is one such book.
